Day 1 of fall sports season

Friday was Day 1 of the high school fall sports season.
Only two of the area’s eight football teams won (Wolcott and Holy Cross). The Eagles scored a 42-6 victory at home over Wilby while the Crusaders upended Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech 19-2 in a low-scoring affair at Ray Snyder Sr. Field in Waterbury. St. Paul dropped a close one 12-8 to Derby, Crosby lost to Torrington 50-31, Kennedy was defeated by Naugatuck 34-16 and Bristol Eastern was shut out by E.O. Smith 21-0.
On the pitch, the Bristol Eastern boys won in dramatic fashion on the road at Rocky Hill when Chris LeBeau scored with 15 seconds to play.
The Bristol Central girls beat Maloney 4-1 at home (Twitter page for BC girls soccer). Adalia Malick scored two goals and had an assist in her first varsity match. Ava Gorneault added a goal and two assists while Ashley Macdonald chipped in a goal and an assist. Nicole Breault and Ellesse DiNeno were great on defense, and Brianna Hamel filled in admirably at goal. The Bristol Eastern girls lost at home to Rocky Hill.
Bristol Eastern girls volleyball notched a 3-0 win over Rocky Hill at home. The Lancers (school athletics Twitter page) got strong efforts from Bailey Wyrebek, Angela Daley, Megan Gettings and Paisley Tucker. Bristol Central opened with a 3-1 home win over Maloney.
At Sacred Heart (school athletics Twitter page), girls swimming defeated the Maloney/Platt co-op, boys soccer lost 3-1 to Kennedy, and girls soccer was downed 9-0 by Holy Cross.
Wolcott started the girls soccer season with a 5-0 shutout of Seymour.
Holy Cross volleyball opened up with a 3-1 win over Watertown. St. Paul lost 3-0 to Oxford while Crosby and Kennedy went down by the same 3-0 margins to Torrington and Seymour.
In swimming, the Kennedy/Kaynor Tech co-op was defeated by Seymour while Wilby lost to Torrington and Holy Cross to Woodland. St. Paul swimming lost at Watertown.

I figured I would give out a bunch of updates from the first day. Other days won’t be as detailed as this, as it would require too much time. I’ll look to hit major highlights at other times.
