“A trip down 69”: Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015

The calendar has officially turned from October to November (darn), but here’s “A trip down 69” for the final week of the month. Saturday marked the CIAC state cross country championships at Wickham Park in Manchester, so we’ll start there.

Runners from Bristol, Waterbury and Wolcott competed at the state meets, all held at Wickham Park in Manchester.
The top finisher from the area was senior Matt Varnum of Bristol Central, who took 9th place in the Class L boys meet. Bristol Central junior Hannah Jones finished 11th in the Class L girls race. In Class L, Kennedy sophomore Kyle Hotchkiss placed 12th. Kaynor Tech freshman Hannah Stoveken impressed with an 18th place finish in the Class SS girls meet. In Class S, Sacred Heart junior Rachel Guay was 20th overall.
Bristol Central also had the best team finishes. The Rams were 10th in the Class L boys meet, 11th in Class L girls. The St. Paul boys finished 12th out of 26 teams in Class S.

Kaynor Tech girls volleyball qualifies for Class M state tourney on final day
The Kaynor Tech girls volleyball team defeated Goodwin Tech 3-2 in New Britain last Monday to qualify for the Class M state tournament.
A team must win 40 percent of its matches, and the victory was the eighth of the season for the Panthers. That gives them a winning percentage of 42.1 (8-11 record).

St. Paul girls, Crosby boys advance to NVL soccer semifinals
Two area teams will play in the NVL’s soccer tournament semifinals on Monday and Tuesday.
The St. Paul girls turned away Wolcott 1-0 on Saturday and will play Woodland in the semifinals Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Ray Snyder Sr. Field (Municipal Stadium) in Waterbury. Woodland defeated Seymour 8-0. 
The Crosby boys defeated St. Paul 2-1 to move on to the semifinals, where they will play Naugatuck at 7:30 p.m. at Ray Snyder Sr. Field. Naugatuck beat Seymour 3-0 in their quarterfinal match.
On Saturday, the Holy Cross girls lost 3-2 (4-1 PKs) in a quarterfinal match against Watertown. Watertown plays Naugatuck in the other semifinal on Monday.

Ben Pryor nominated for athlete of the week
St. Paul senior running back and captain Ben Pryor put together a monster performance against Wolcott on Friday night, and for that he has been nominated for an award.
CPTV Sports nominated Pryor for its UChoose Student Athlete of the Week after Pryor accumulated 344 yards and seven touchdowns in a 69-52 loss. You can vote for Ben until 6 p.m. on Monday.
