Holy Cross softball walks off against East Granby, makes second straight final

Holy Cross junior Sarah Lawton is a good bunter.
You may not expect that from the third batter in the lineup.
Expect the unexpected.
After Allie Brown tripled to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning of Thursday's Class S state semifinal against East Granby, Lawton laid down a bunt. The bunt scored Brown, and top-seeded Holy Cross was able to celebrate a 2-1 victory and a second straight trip to the final.
Holy Cross plays No. 6 Notre Dame-Fairfield in Saturday's Class S state final at 1 p.m. at DeLuca Field in Stratford. The Lancers scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun No. 10 Stafford by a score of 7-6.
East Granby scored a run in the top of the first inning of Thursday's game at West Haven's Biondi Field, then held Holy Cross at bay until the bottom of the fifth inning. Becca Anderson had a one-out single, then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Gabby Goldman. Up stepped Hannah Brown, and her single brought in Anderson to tie the game at 1-1.
East Granby got the leadoff batter on in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings but couldn't get the run across against Lawton. There was a controversial call that went against East Granby in the top of the eighth. A runner was called out after it was determined that she left third base early, but replay on "The Zone" shows that to not be the case. It was a tough call to make live though. Go here to see the video.
Hannah Brown, Alexandra Lombardo and Anderson each had two hits for Holy Cross. Allie Brown and Lawton had one hit apiece.
