Top-seeded Holy Cross outslugs No. 9 Wheeler in Class S softball quarterfinal

Pitching is usually paramount in high school softball, but there are days when the offense needs to produce more.
Thursday afternoon proved to be one of those times at Holy Cross High School. Top-seeded Holy Cross needed its offense to step up, and step up it did.
Holy Cross' Becca Anderson gets ready to swing against Wheeler on Thursday.
Alexandra Lombardo and Sarah Lawton each went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Val Nobrega was 2-for-4 with two RBI in a 9-6 victory over No. 9 Wheeler. The Crusaders had 12 hits, with Allie Brown also having a multi-hit day with two. Hannah Brown and Lawton tallied two runs scored apiece. Lombardo had a triple while Lawton added a double.
Holy Cross scored its runs in three different bursts. There were two runs in the bottom of the first, three in the second, then four more in the fourth.
Wheeler did manage 10 hits and six runs, but it wasn't enough on this day.
Holy Cross will play No. 4 East Granby in a rematch of last year's Class S semifinals. The Crusaders are the defending state champion and will be looking for a return trip to the final. The location, date and time of the game are to be determined, so stay tuned for more information.
