TUESDAY’S CLASS L TRACK AND FIELD ROUNDUP: State titles for Bristol Eastern’s Gianna D’Amato and Bristol Central’s Jevon Smith

Bristol Eastern senior Gianna D’Amato picked a great time to uncork her best javelin throw.
D’Amato unloaded a throw of 125 feet, 2 inches, and that toss was beyond good enough to give her a Class L state championship on Tuesday at Middletown High School.
It wasn’t D’Amato’s best postseason throw. That came during the CCC South Region championship meet on May 23 at Willowbrook Park in New Britain, where she won the title with a throw of 128-06. Still, it was a great throw, a state championship-winning throw.
D’Amato was the lone state champion from the area in Class L girls.
Bristol Central sophomore Shy-Ann Whitten finished fourth in a tight high jump competition. In javelin, Bristol Eastern junior Jillian LeBeau placed eighth while teammate Brooke Dauphinee was ninth.
In the 4×800-meter relay, a young Bristol Central squad of Hannah Jones (junior), Meghan Curtis (sophomore), Ashley Cummings (junior) and Paige Hinton (sophomore) was ninth.
Class L boys
In the boys meet, Bristol Central finished fifth as a team. Bristol Central senior Jevon Smith was a winner in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.14 seconds. Senior teammate Jorge Hernandez was second at 15.23. The two also competed in the 300 hurdles, with Hernandez taking sixth and Smith ninth. Teammate Tamir Hornesby, another senior, was fifth in that event.
Bristol Central had a bunch of success in the relays. The 4×400 of junior Luis Medina, senior Tamir Hornesby, junior Kaynan Conrod and senior Kareem Davis finished second. In the 4×100, Hernandez, Conrod, Smith and Medina combined to finish fifth. The 4×800 of Hornesby, senior Matthew Viarengo, senior Matthew Varnum and senior Andrew Marcantonio took eighth.
Here are other individual finishers in the Top 10 from BC: Conrod, 7th in 100-meter dash; Davis, 7th in 400 dash; Marcantonio, 10th in 800; Tyshaun Rodriguez, senior, tied 4th; Matthew Pittman, senior, 8th.
