Wolcott baseball clinches first-ever state final berth

Matt Warren and Wolcott baseball area headed to the Class M state championship game.
It’s the first-ever appearance for the Eagles in program history.

The magical run continues for the eighth-seeded Wolcott baseball team.
The Eagles kept up their hot hitting, even after a lightning delay, on Tuesday night at Zipadelli Field (Sage Park) in Berlin and came away with a 10-1 pounding of No. 4 Haddam-Killingworth.
With the win, Wolcott made history. The Eagles are going to their first-ever state final in program history. They will play No. 14 Northwestern Regional for the Class M championship on either Friday or Saturday at Middletown’s Palmer Field.
Wolcott pounded out 14 hits to back another complete-game victory by ace senior Ike Negretti. There were only two extra-base hits — both doubles — for the Eagles, but contributions ran up and down the lineup.
Here’s how it looked:

Steve Urbanski — 2-for-5, run scored
Matt Warren — 1-for-3, run scored
Ray Bartoli — 2-for-4, RBI, run scored
Jacob Gabriel — 1-for-4, double, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored
Nick Longo — 4-for-4, run scored
Eric Gillotti — 2-for-3, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored
Bobby White — 1-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 run scored
Brad Grasso — 1-for-1, RBI

As for Negretti, he threw 61 of his 92 pitches for strikes, struck out nine and walked two. Negretti gave up a single run on just three hits to earn his fourth victory of the tournament.
This win was by far the biggest. In fact, it was history-making.
Wolcott will play for the state championship this weekend. Let those words sink in.
The Eagles are flying higher than they ever have, and the journey isn’t over yet. There’s one game left.
