AMERICAN LEGION: Waterbury finally loses a Zone 5 game; Bristol keeps pace with Avon in Zone 1

It finally happened.
Waterbury Post 1 lost a Zone 5 game. After an 11-0 start in the zone, Waterbury dropped a 2-0 decision to Bethel on June 30 in the second game of a doubleheader at Bucks Hill Park.
What has Waterbury done since the loss? Win, of course.
Post 1 romped through a doubleheader sweep of Ansonia this past Sunday in the zone, then went out of the zone and knocked off Middletown 12-5 on Monday. Jamie Butler and Zachary Rodriguez tossed complete games for Waterbury against Ansonia. In the Middletown game, Post 1 jumped ahead quickly with a run in the first inning, followed by five in the second and four in the third.
Waterbury is 13-1 in the zone, and holds a record of 18-1-1 overall. Post 1 is currently tied with Bethel (14-2) for the zone lead. Waterbury and Bethel are scheduled to play each other Saturday at 5 p.m. at Bethel High School.

Bristol keeps up with Avon in Zone 1
In the ever-changing top tier of the Zone 1 standings, Post 2 has managed to stick around Avon.
Bristol owns a 11-4-1 zone record after a doubleheader sweep of Winsted this past Sunday. That puts Post 2 a half game behind Avon (12-4) for first place. The one tie came on June 30 in a game at Muzzy Field against Simsbury (12-6-1 zone record). The game was suspended in the top of the 10th inning, tied 3-3, due to city curfew.
In the first game of Sunday’s double dip, Bristol rallied for a run in the sixth and seventh innings at Winsted’s Walker Field to take a 3-2 victory. Andrew Owsianko pitched two innings in relief of Noah Cruz to pick up the win.
In the second game, Wesley Lahey started the nine-inning affair and went seven innings. Bristol was again tied with Winsted, this time 6-6 in the top of the ninth inning. Post 2 broke through for three runs in the frame and claimed a 9-6 win.
