FIRST DAY ROUNDUP: Crosby, Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech football both win on the road

Here’s a wrap-up of what went down on Friday, opening day of the fall sports season for most area high school teams.

FOOTBALL
Crosby 41, Woodland 29: The Bulldogs got off to a great start with a road win over the Hawks in Beacon Falls. Crosby hopes to get over .500 this season, and a win to start the year is always good. The Bulldogs are known for a strong offense, and they put it on display against the Hawks.
Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech 34, St. Paul 22: The co-op came away with a great road win over the Falcons in Bristol. For a program that has struggled, starting off the season 1-0 is a great thing.
E.O. Smith 21, Bristol Eastern 0: The first game of the Anthony (A.J.) Julius era didn’t go well as the Lancers lost to the Panthers at Muzzy Field.
Ansonia 62, Wolcott 21: The Eagles were overmatched against the Chargers, who looked better than preseason expectations indicated they would.
Windsor 47, Bristol Central 0: Big plays killed the Rams in a road loss against the high-powered Warriors.

BOYS SOCCER
Bristol Eastern 2, Maloney 1: Shane Caggiano and Jake Woznicki had the goals for the Lancers in a home victory. Eastern’s defense was solid, according to a Tweet from the school’s athletics account.
Derby 3, Waterbury Career Academy 1: The Spartans lost the first varsity match they have ever played, but Valerie Lopes got a big thrill when he scored the first goal in school history.
Kennedy 6, St. Paul 5: The Eagles won a wild matchup against the Falcons on a goal by Brian Portela with 1:30 left, according to a report on The Zone website. The match was the first for St. Paul head coach Joe Abele.
Oxford 7, Crosby 1: It’s a new era for the Bulldogs and head coach Victor Gonzalez, but it didn’t start well on the new turf at Jimmy Lee Stadium. The Wolverines overwhelmed the Bulldogs and turned it into a long evening.
Torrington 4, Holy Cross 0: The Crusader boys got to play the first regular season match on the Alumni Field grass, but the Red Raiders rolled to the road win.
Naugatuck 7, Wilby 0: The Wildcats had a tall order against the Greyhounds, and it showed in a lopsided loss.
Wolcott 1, Sacred Heart 0: The Eagles opened with a tight win over the Hearts.

GIRLS SOCCER
Holy Cross 1, St. Paul 1: The Crusaders and Falcons played to a deadlock in Bristol.
Bristol Central 4, New Britain 0: The Rams rolled to a win in Ginny Godbout’s first match as head coach. Godbout took over for Scott Redman, who has his first match as Eastern’s head coach today (Saturday).
