WEEK 2 FOOTBALL STATS: Mike Polzella’s big game for Wolcott; St. Paul’s rushing attack

For starters…
Wolcott got the bounce-back victory that it needed last Friday when it beat up Kennedy by a score of 53-0.
Leading the offensive charge for the Eagles was quarterback Mike Polzella. Polzella was accurate, completing 14-of-18 passes. He also picked up passing yards in chunks, 252 to be exact. Polzella tossed touchdown passes of 19 and 51 yards to Steve Urbanski, along with a 12-yard scoring strike to Justin Fernandes.
Wolcott also went well over 200 yards on the ground, tallying 271 for the game. Ray Iorio led the ground game with 24 carries for 159 yards and touchdowns of 2 and 3 yards. Polzella had a 10-yard scoring run, and Anthony Ligi took one in from 11 yards. Wolcott’s final score came on a 50-yard run by Mason Desaulniers.
On defense, Bobby Stoeckert, Ethan Miner and Urbanski had six total tackles each.

St. Paul runs wild
The Falcons picked up all of their 432 total offensive yards on the ground in a 46-13 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders.
Both Pierce Piana and Damien Rabis tallied 180 yards or more for St. Paul, which evened its record at 1-1. Piana ground out 184 yards on 22 carries, including touchdown runs of 29 and 23 yards. Rabis got his 180 yards in just seven carries, and four of those runs went for touchdowns. Rabis scored on runs of 36, 4, 80 and 47 yards.
Chris Dionne had six rushes for 26 yards while Connor Bogdanski added two attempts for three yards. Dionne and Bogdanski each ran for a pair of two-point conversions.

The good and the not-so-good
Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech sophomore quarterback Trey Dawson threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns on 24-of-45 attempts, according to stats compiled by Mark Jaffee of the Waterbury Republican-American.
Those are some good numbers.
On the flip side, Dawson threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. Sacred Heart trailed 25-0 at the half and went on to lose 42-14 to Oxford.

Some others to note…

  • Bristol Central quarterback Isaiah Miller put up 153 total yards of offense in a tough 20-14 loss to South Windsor. Miller was 7-of-16 passing for 110 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also carried the ball 13 times for 43 yards and a touchdown.
  • On what was otherwise a rough night for Crosby (38-13 loss to Derby), running back Donte Detanto had a good job carrying the ball. Detanto ran 21 times for 121 yards and a touchdown.

All other stats besides Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech were obtained through the Hudl accounts of each team.
