Wolcott girls continue to swim with Naugatuck as “one-man teams”

A pair of Wolcott girls will again have the opportunity to compete in high school swimming this fall.
The Wolcott Board of Education approved “one-man teams” for Maya DuPlessis and Skylar Romsky, in conjunction with Naugatuck High School and head coach Jim McKee. Wolcott doesn’t have a full-fledged swim team at the high school level. The one-man teams were approved at the Aug. 22 meeting of the BOE.
Wolcott had some success in the pool last year. Senior Carrington Conner finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly and 14th in the 200-yard individual medley at the Class S state championship meet. Carrington, er Wolcott, finished 23rd in the team standings with 35 points.
Senior Sarah Burton took part in the Class S qualifying meet.
In 2014, Conner was 14th in the 200 IM and 20th in the 100 butterfly. Burton took 22nd in the 500 freestyle, and combining her points warned with Conner gave Wolcott 21, good for 30th at the meet.
Conner also competed in the 2012 and 2013 Class S meets.
Victoria Russo took part in several Class S competitions, and Kristina Bystrak scored 30 points by herself two years in a row (2009 and 2010). Bystrak also had 28 points in 2008 as a sophomore, including an eighth place finish (21 points) in the 500 freestyle.
Conner, Burton, Russo and Bystrak wouldn’t have had the opportunity without the one-man team option. DuPlessis and Romsky get that opportunity this season.
