Kennedy athletic fields get fresh, new look

The Kennedy boys soccer team practiced on the new turf
of the Coach Charles “Ripper” Donato Athletic Field.

Crosby wasn’t the only Waterbury high school to see upgrades to its athletic facilities
Kennedy High School can also be put on that list.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Saturday morning for both the athletic fields and an addition at the school.
The new field turf was dedicated in honor of Charles “Ripper” Donato.
The softball field was named after John P. Kinney.

The John P. Kinney softball field has a tall backstop
with a folded top that will keep foul balls
from striking the school behind the plate.

As Joe Palladino pointed out in his Waterbury Republican-American article on Sunday, the only varsity games to be played in this complex will be softball.
Still, it’s important to have a place to practice. Practice is where all the hard work is put in.
The Kennedy boys soccer team was hard at work on Monday. The Eagles were busy getting ready for an evening road match at Crosby.
Before the renovations, it was just a Kennedy softball field with a large patch of grass in the outfield and beyond.
Kennedy gets what it can out of its property, to say the least.
For example, the fence in the south end zone keeps balls from going into the yards of neighboring houses.
On the softball field, the backstop fence is tall, and the folded top will keep foul balls from breaking the windows on the nearby school.
