WEEK 5 FOOTBALL STATS: A couple of 99-yard efforts, a good passing night, and a lucky 13

For starters…
The number 99 was popular last week, and that’s 99 yards, the distance an offense — and one player — covered.
Seymour pinned Wolcott on its own 1 in their NVL showdown. How did the Eagles respond? With a 99-yard push for a touchdown. That’s impressive.
Waterbury Career Academy’s Josiah Rivers decided to cover 99 yards by himself. Rivers erupted through an open hole in the Crosby defense and was gone for a touchdown run. Rivers’s run is the longest in the NVL this season.

Spartans tally 62 points
Waterbury Career Academy went off in a 62-24 road win over Crosby. The aforementioned Rivers ran for 202 yards and three touchdowns, according to Mark Jaffee of the Waterbury Republican-American.

Have a night Mike Polzella!
Wolcott’s first-year quarterback was 14-of-21 passing for 205 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Polzella’s efficiency helped his team control the ball and get in the end zone. He also ran for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Lucky 13
Wolcott’s Steve Urbanski had 13 tackles in the win over Seymour.

Solid night for Iorio
Wolcott workhorse running back Ray Iorio had 155 yards on 32 carries, including a fourth down conversion that sealed the win.

St. Paul again over 300 rushing yards
The Falcons continue to rack up the rushing yards. Eight players combined for 304 yards on the ground in St. Paul’s 26-14 victory over Torrington. The Falcons were up 26-0 on the hosts after three quarters.
Damien Rabis led the way with 111 yards and a touchdown. Chris Dionne had 69 yards and two touchdowns while Pierce Piana added 51 yards and a score. Joe Aiello carried for 35 yards, Connor Bogdanski 16, Kevin Ashworth 14, Noah Mendoza 4 and Jake Lafferty 4.
The Falcons would obviously love to cut down on the 10 penalties and 112 penalty yards they tallied.

Bristol Central with a big ground effort, too
The Rams tallied 246 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 48 attempts in a 29-19 win on the road over Farmington.
Central jumped out to a 14-0 lead, and Farmington got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Rams have won three straight games and are 3-2 entering their next contest against Maloney.

Also three straight wins for Holy Cross
The Crusaders took down Derby 40-27 to go above the .500 mark for the first time this season. Holy Cross is 3-2 entering Saturday’s game at home against Torrington.
