Several big area football games on tap for Friday

There are several big games in the area on Friday night.

Naugatuck at Wolcott, 6:30
After the loss to the Oxford Wolverines, the Eagles (5-2) are on the outside looking in at 9th in the Class M playoff standings. Remember, the top eight teams in each class make the playoffs. Wolcott needs a win, and it faces a big challenge from high-powered Naugatuck (6-1). The Greyhounds are 5th in Class L and would love to maintain their position. The Eagles need to avoid falling behind big like they did against the Wolverines, and they need to avoid turnovers. Wolcott needs to do what it does best.

Bristol Central at Newington, 6:30
At 10th in Class L, the Rams (4-3) have a shot. Central needs to take care of business on its own end, and the first step is to take down Newington (3-4) on the road. The Indians have been playing better recently, so this won’t be an easy game for the Rams.

St. Paul Catholic at Seymour, 7
This is a must-win game for the 13th-ranked Falcons (5-2), but it won’t be easy by any stretch. Seymour (5-2) sits 9th in the same class — Class S — and also has playoff aspirations. The Wildcats are coming off of a lopsided loss to the undefeated Ansonia Chargers, so they will be motivated. The Falcons need to do what they do, run the ball and control the clock.

Sacred Heart/Kaynor Tech at Kennedy, 7
SH/KT (4-3) sits in 12th place in Class L right now, so this is a big game for the co-op. Kennedy (3-4) would like nothing better than to put a dent in a city foe’s playoff hopes. SH/KT has three winnable games left and can get to 7-3, but it needs to start against Kennedy.
