TOURNEY TIME: Holy Cross, St. Paul girls soccer win in blowouts

Two area girls soccer teams were on the winning side of the most lopsided scores in first round state tournament matches.
Another saw its season come to a heartbreaking end in overtime.
Here’s what happened:

GIRLS SOCCER
No. 10 Holy Cross 9, No. 23 Wolcott Tech 0
The Crusaders were in no mood to help the Wildcats celebrate their first-ever state tournament match.
Holy Cross led 7-0 at the half on the way to victory at LaMoy Field on the campus of Post University. The Crusaders will face No. 7 Coventry in Class S’s second round on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Coventry High School.
Coventry has been one of Class S’s solid programs over the past few years. The Patriots were a No. 4 seed last year and made it to the quarterfinal round. Coventry beat St. Paul in the second round last year after having a first round bye. Coventry also a quarterfinalist in 2014, and it reached the semifinals in 2013.
No. 12 St. Paul 8, No. 21 Lyman Memorial 0
The Falcons also won their Class S first round match in convincing fashion on the grass of McPhee Field.
St. Paul will play No. 5 Housatonic Regional on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Falls Village. The Mountaineers had a first round bye.
Housatonic has been one of Class S’s top programs recently. The Mountaineers were state runner-up in 2014, and they lost in the quarterfinal round on penalty kicks to Holy Cross last year.
St. Paul and Housatonic have some recent tournament history. The Falcons beat the Mountaineers on the road in a 2013 Class S first round match by a score of 2-1.
Class M
No. 26 Rocky Hill 1, No. 7 Wolcott 0 (2 OT)
The Eagles saw a great season come to a tough end at home against the Terriers.
Wolcott finishes the season with a record of 12-3-4. It was the final match for Eagle seniors Cynthia Dias, Sarah Begley, Kayla Mayo and Megan Doubleday. Doubleday was chosen as the NVL’s top senior, and Chris Riviezzo was coach of the year.
