TOURNEY TIME: Kennedy, Bristol Eastern and Holy Cross girls volleyball squads all win

There were three area winners on the first day of the girls volleyball state tournament.
Kennedy, Bristol Eastern and Holy Cross all won first round matches. The Eagles and Lancers each earned a second round match in Class L. The Crusaders will head out on the road in Round Two in Class S.
Wolcott (Class M), Kaynor Tech (Class M) and Crosby (Class L) saw their seasons come to an end. Here’s what happened:

Class L
No. 7 Kennedy 3, No. 26 Maloney 2
The Eagles outlasted the Spartans and will get to play another day.
Kennedy trailed the visitors from Meriden two sets to one, but came back to win. The set scores were 25-20, 16-25, 18-25, 25-22 and 15-8.
Kennedy will host No. 10 Bunnell of Stratford, a 3-0 winner over No. 23 Crosby, on Thursday at 6 p.m.
No. 8 Bristol Eastern 3, No. 25 Lauralton Hall 0
The Lancers dispatched their guests from Milford in straight sets.
The set scores 25-14, 28-26 and 25-9. Eastern was able to put Lauralton away after it made a valiant attempt to even the match at one set apiece.
The Lancers will host No. 9 Naugatuck, a 3-2 winner over No. 24 Ledyard, on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Class S
No. 14 Holy Cross 3, No. 19 Whitney Tech 1
The Crusaders were able to fight back and win the fourth set going away after losing the third set.
Holy Cross got off to a big start with easy wins in the first two sets, but its guest from Hamden got one back in the third set. The set scores were 25-9, 25-6, 20-25 and 25-12.
Holy Cross will travel to Moodus to play No. 3 Hale Ray (first round bye) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Class M
No. 10 Suffield 3, No. 2 Wolcott 2
The Eagles gave their opponents all they could handle before falling in five sets.
Wolcott held a two sets to one lead after winning the second and third ones. Suffield won the next two sets to claim victory. The set scores 25-14, 22-25, 23-25, 25-12 and 17-15.
Wolcott finished with a record of 8-11. It was the final match for Eagle seniors Rebecca Tynan, Justine Bracco, Kaitlyn Lofgren, Gabrielle Roy and Saranda Alka.
No. 9 Woodland 3, No. 24 Kaynor Tech 0
The Panthers were eliminated in straight sets by the Hawks in Beacon Falls.
The set scores were 25-8, 25-11 and 25-10. Kaynor Tech finished with a record of 8-12. It was the final match for seniors Tara Coehlo and Roza Pine.
Class L
No. 10 Bunnell 3, No. 23 Crosby 0
Crosby saw its season end in straight sets in a battle of Bulldogs.
The set scores were 25-13, 25-15 and 25-14. Crosby finished with a record of 9-12. It was the final match for seniors Egla Hasimllari and Kayci Ferrer.
