Wolcott football gets big NVL Iron Division win over Naugatuck

Wolcott football barrelled its way to a touchdown and a 27-14 lead in the third quarter of Friday night’s NVL Iron Division showdown against Naugatuck at Joe Monroe Field.
Dylan Prescott then sealed the game for the Eagles (6-2) with a 50-yard interception return for a score. Wolcott added touchdowns from Ray Iorio and Steve Urbanski to win 49-20. Naugatuck (6-2) scored on the game’s final play with a running clock. Wolcott is still alive in its hunt for a Class M playoff spot, and it can clinch the division title at home next week against Torrington.
The first half certainly wasn’t a rout. Iorio started the scoring for the Eagles from three yards out, and a Prescott extra point made it 7-0. Mike Polzella scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns, from four yards away, for a 14-0 lead after another Prescott kick.
Naugatuck countered with a five-yard touchdown run from Mike Plasky. Steve Urbanski hauled in a 10-yard pass from Polzella for a Wolcott score, and Prescott made it 21-8 Eagles with the point after. Jacob Fazekas’ 18-yard touchdown run made it 21-14, and that’s where the score stayed at the half.
Polzella started Wolcott’s second half onslaught with a six-yard touchdown run. The extra point was missed. After the Prescott interception return, Iorio ran in the two-point conversion to put the Eagles ahead 35-14.
Prescott had a huge game for Wolcott. At one point in the third quarter, WATR play-by-play guy Kyle Brennan (also a reporter at the Waterbury Republican-American) noted that Prescott had 1.5 sacks and a pick-6 to his credit.
Iorio went over 200 yards for the game, according to the guys at WATR, who did a fantastic job calling the game.
Wolcott had a big game offensively, even without two starting receivers (injuries), and the defense made the stops when necessary. Naugatuck also shot itself in the foot on many occasions.
Wolcott is scheduled to host Torrington next Saturday at 5 p.m. Note the different day for the game. It is not on Friday, according to the team’s CIAC schedule.
