WATERBURY’S WEEKLY ROUNDUP #3: Holy Cross boys swimming and diving beats Sacred Heart

The Holy Cross boys swimming and diving team took down rival Sacred Heart 94-83 on Wednesday night at Kennedy High School.
Chris Fryer had wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Individual wins also came from Sam Mason (50 free), Jack Tucker (100 free) and Chris Ford (500 free). Holy Cross won the 200 medley relay (Ford, Ben Bowler, Fryer, Mason) and 200 free relay (Mason, Bowler, Tucker, Fryer).
For Sacred Heart, individual wins came from Dan Walsh (200 free), Ben Gomes (diving), Carlos Torres (100 back) and Will Witkoski (100 breast). The Hearts also won the 400 free relay (Walsh, Adam Taylor, Alex Tillis, Torres).
Crosby has taken on a new partner in boys swimming and diving, Waterbury Career Academy. The co-op dropped to 83-73 meet against Torrington on Wednesday. 

BOYS BASKETBALL
Holy Cross celebrated the dedication of the court inside Tim McDonald Gymnasium to the legend Ed Generali, then held on for a 56-54 win over Waterbury Career Academy. Earlier in the week, the Crusaders defeated the Ansonia Chargers. Holy Cross has three straight victories since a home loss to Sacred Heart and is 7-1.
Speaking of Sacred Heart, the Hearts blew out Derby and Wilby, then pulled away from Torrington on the road to remain undefeated at 6-0.
Kennedy came up with a pair of road wins, knocking off Bridgeport Central and Crosby. The game between the Eagles and Bulldogs was supposed to be a battle, but the visitors overwhelmed their city rivals 69-46. Kennedy also beat St. Paul at home and is 7-1. 
Crosby blew out Derby and first-year head coach Eric O’Toole — Sacred Heart baseball coach, then won over Naugatuck on the road. The Bulldogs were riding a good wave of momentum before Friday’s home loss to Kennedy and are now 7-2.
Waterbury Career Academy won a close game on the road at Amistad, then blew out Watertown at home. In the Amistad game, Watson had a double-double while Matt Torres and Jadan Battle also hit double figures in points. The Spartans closed out the week with a close road loss to Holy Cross and are 5-2.
Wilby (3-4) blew out Woodland at home on Wednesday, then was blown out on the road by Sacred Heart on Friday.
Kaynor Tech (1-7) dropped road games to Abbott Tech and Whitney Tech.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Holy Cross improved to 10-1 with wins over Seymour, Oxford and Waterbury Career Academy. The Crusaders have won eight straight games since a loss to Mercy in the CPTV Sports Tip-Off Classic. Holy Cross has gotten to 10-1 without the services of Century McCartney, recovering from knee surgery. Idalis Miranda, Aiyana Ward and Meah Austin have been leading the way, but there has also been help from Gabby Goldman as well.
Sacred Heart won three times this week to improve to 8-3. The Hearts started off 4-3, but have gotten rolling since a home loss to Holy Cross. Treasure Coleman, Aamya Rivera and Victoria Santiago have been among those playing well.
Kennedy (7-3) rounded out a tough week with a home win over Crosby on Friday night. The Eagles lost on the road at Torrington and St. Paul, two of the top teams in the NVL.
Kaynor Tech (7-4) won three games this week — four in a row overall — to pull within a victory of a state tournament berth. The Panthers knocked off Oxford, Abbott Tech and Whitney Tech at home this past week.
Waterbury Career Academy (5-6) won 58-55 in overtime on Monday at Aerospace, then dropped games at Watertown and Holy Cross. The Spartans return home next week for games against Kennedy and Woodland. Armani Weaver erupted for 29 points (8 3-pointers) in the win over Aerospace.
Crosby got into the win column for the first team this season by beating Derby 42-37 Monday night. Daahjah Heath and Tihana Pulliam both scored 14 points for the Bulldogs. Crosby dropped a game to Kennedy on Friday night to fall to 1-7.
Wilby is 0-9 after losses to Woodland and Sacred Heart.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
McReavy Invitational, Wesleyan University (Friday): Jordon Wilkins of Kaynor Tech won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.87 seconds. In the girls 55 dash, Kaynor Tech’s Zyiera Brown took seventh place.
Marc-Anthony Telusma of Kennedy ran to a sixth place finish in the 55 dash.
Mark Auguste of Holy Cross ran the 55-meter hurdles in 8.76 seconds, good for seventh place.
For the Chase Collegiate boys, the 4×800 relay of Bill Chen, Brendan Wilmot, Ethan Puc and Dwyer Grimes came in sixth place.
