Sacred Heart sophomore Edward Williams had a memorable night the last time he competed inside New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.
That was during the NVL championship meet.
Williams was back in New Haven for the Class S state meet Tuesday, and all he did was bring home a championship. Williams was seeded third in the 55-meter hurdles after the preliminaries, but he outran the top two spots, along with everyone else, on the way to the title. Williams won the event in 7.77 seconds, knocking .4 off his preliminary time.
Williams also took part in the 55-meter dash and finished fourth.
As a team, the Sacred Heart boys were tied for 15th place with 14 points. All of the points were earned by Williams.
Kaynor Tech junior Zyiera Brown jumped three spots from preliminaries to finish second in the girls 55-meter hurdles. The Panthers finished 16th as a team with eight points due to the efforts of Brown.
St. Paul competed in Class S, but didn’t score any team points. Senior Pierce Piana had the best boys finish, taking seventh in the shot put. Sophomore Addison Davis paced the girls with a tie for 11th place in the high jump.
Two Holy Cross boys competed in the meet, but didn’t score any points. Senior Chris Flynn was 18th in the 600 meters while junior Marckens Auguste false started in the 55-meter hurdles.
Some local athletes will get a chance to compete in the State Open on Feb. 20, but that won’t be finalized until after today’s Class LL meet.
