WATERBURY’S WEEKLY ROUNDUP #7: Sacred Heart’s Carroll gets 200th win

Sacred Heart head coach Jon Carroll picked up his 200th career coaching win on Saturday.

Sacred Heart boys basketball picked up three wins last week, and the final one was a milestone for head coach Jon Carroll.
When the Hearts finally closed out the pesky Crosby Bulldogs 72-65 on Saturday evening at Alumni Hall, Carroll was rewarded with his 200th career win. Crosby made a game of it, cutting its deficit to a point at the end of the third quarter. The Bulldogs were down just two with less than a minute remaining, but the Hearts pulled away.
Sacred Heart improved to 16-0 while Crosby dropped to 12-5. Here’s how the rest of the week went for both teams:
SACRED HEART — The Hearts began their week with a 65-63 comeback victory Monday over Holy Cross at Alumni Hall.
Sacred Heart was down as much as 17 in the fourth quarter, but used aggressive defense and drives to the basket to get back into it.
The Hearts continued to win on Wednesday, knocking off Naugatuck 66-42 on the road. Eight different Sacred Heart players scored, led by Isaiah Gaiter as Jon Carroll went deep into his bench.
CROSBY — The Bulldogs got another monster night from Jeremiah Kendall on the way to their 12th win of the season.
Kendall scored 35 points on 13-of-21 shooting. He also had 13 rebounds and six steals in the 81-72 win. Kerwin Prince had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Kendall and Miguel Rivera (11 points) each made three 3-pointers. Tarique Foggie also scored 11 points for Crosby, which improved to 12-4.
Kennedy: The Eagles got off to a terrible start Wednesday against Wilby, but rallied for a 76-65 home win.
Solid scoring from Tyairus Sands, Jeremy Acosta and Tyvon Stenson helped get Kennedy to 13-3 on the season.
Friday’s game at WCA was postponed to Feb. 20.
Holy Cross: The Crusaders had the Hearts down and almost out on Monday, but couldn’t hang on to a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter at Alumni Hall.
When it was going well, Nyzair Rountree and DeAndre Wallace were scoring above the rim while Jack Potter and Kerson Eitenne were knocking down 3s. Holy Cross fell to 12-4 on the season.
Thursday’s home game against Wilby was postponed to this Friday at 7 p.m.
Waterbury Career Academy: The Spartans battled but lost to Crosby 81-72 on the road Wednesday to fall to 9-7.
Friday’s home game against Kennedy will be made up on Feb. 20.
Wilby: The Wildcats got off to a great start in Wednesday’s road game against Kennedy, but couldn’t sustain it in the 76-65 loss.
Thursday’s game against Holy Cross will be played this coming Friday at 7 p.m.
Saturday’s game against Hartford Public was postponed with the reschedule date to be announced.

Kaynor Tech: The Panthers took a tough loss on the road, 64-61 to Bullard-Havens Tech on Monday in New Haven.
Zachary Jules, Tyler Fengler and Darren Guerrera all scored in double figures.
Wednesday brought a 75-45 loss to Bassick, which dropped Kaynor Tech to 4-12.
Friday’s game against Bullard-Havens Tech will now be played this coming Tuesday.
Chase Collegiate: The Highlanders picked up a tight 56-54 win at South Kent on Wednesday.
Jordan Alexander and Drew Barbeau each had double-doubles for Chase, which also got a solid effort from Jack Cook.
The Highlanders were blown out by the Watkinson School on Saturday and fell to 3-11.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Holy Cross: The Crusaders began the week with a 59-27 blowout of Crosby on Monday on the road.
Aiyana Ward, Meah Austin, Nevya Vermette, Hannah Brown and Natalie Hodak all scored five or more points, with Ward reaching double figures.
Holy Cross needed a fourth-quarter rally to take down Sacred Heart on Wednesday. The Crusaders were down five entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the Hearts by 18 to win 63-50. Holy Cross improved to 17-1 behind Ward, Idalis Miranda, Austin and Hannah Brown.
Friday’s game against Wilby was postponed to this Monday at Wilby.
Kennedy: Friday’s game against WCA has been postponed to this Monday.
Saturday’s game against Wilby has been rescheduled for this coming Wednesday. The Eagles are 12-5 going into the final week of the regular season.
Sacred Heart: The Hearts had the Crusaders on the ropes, but were done in by a tough quarter.
Four Sacred Heart players reached double figures — Victoria Santiago, Jenna Madigan, Treasure Coleman and Hayley Tucker.
The Hearts rebounded with a 46-32 home win over Crosby on Saturday. Sacred Heart improved to 12-6 with the victory.
Kaynor Tech: The Panthers won 49-45 at Bassick on Wednesday to claim the CSC West Division title.
Kaynor Tech, now 12-5, got 22 points and 20 rebounds from Egypt Santos, according to a box score on The Zone. Roberta King, Cassie Couture and Sarah Wisniewski also came up big for the Panthers.
Friday’s game against Bullard-Havens Tech was postponed to this Wednesday.
WCA: The Spartans moved a win closer to a state tournament berth on Wednesday by blowing out Wilby 61-34.
Nine different WCA players scored, led by Armani Weaver and Kendra McPherson. The Spartans improved to 6-11. WCA games against Kennedy and Crosby were pushed to this week. The Spartans are at Kennedy on Monday, then host Crosby on Wednesday. In between is a game against Wilby on Tuesday at home. WCA needs two more wins to qualify for the state tournament.
Crosby: The Bulldogs lost 59-27 at home to Holy Cross on Monday, then were defeated 46-32 by Sacred Heart on the road Saturday.
That leaves Crosby at 5-12 and needing wins in all three of its final games to make the state tournament. The Bulldogs had their game at WCA postponed to this Wednesday.
Wilby: The Wildcats lost to WCA to fall to 0-17 on the season.
A game against Holy Cross was rescheduled to this Monday.
Chase: The Highlanders inched closer to .500 with a 44-28 win at home over The Master’s School on Wednesday.
Chase, now 6-7, got another great game from Sammi Dassatti.

BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING
Holy Cross: The Crusaders remained undefeated (9-0) with a 94-81 win Wednesday over Woodland.
Holy Cross won the first eight events before going exhibition. Lucas Racevicius had two individual wins for the Crusaders.
Friday’s meet against Shepaug Valley has been postponed. The reschedule date hasn’t been announced.
Crosby/WCA: The co-op defeated Nonnewaug 56-45 on Wednesday.
Kennedy: Friday’s meet against Watertown was postponed with a reschedule date to be announced.
Sacred Heart: The Hearts hosted Naugatuck on their Senior Night, Wednesday at Kennedy High School.
Wilby: The meet against Bristol Central/Bristol Eastern/St. Paul was postponed with the date and time to be announced.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Class L: Kennedy senior Marc-Anthony Telusma was the one Top 10 finish by a local athlete at the championship meet Saturday at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Telusma finished eighth in the 300-meter dash.
Class M: Due to the weather this past week, this championship meet is Monday at 4 p.m. in New Haven. Here are the seeds for the Kaynor Tech boys:
