WRESTLING STATE OPEN: Trelli finishes second, Barrett takes third

Bristol Central’s Chris Trelli finished second at 106 pounds in the State Open.

When the CIAC Wrestling State Open began Friday, there were 13 wrestlers from Bristol schools competing.
By the end of Saturday, only Bristol Central’s Chris Trelli and Bristol Eastern’s Mikey Barrett were left. Both earned medals and a trip to the New England Tournament next weekend.
Trelli reached the 106-pound championship final, where he lost a 5-0 decision to Danbury’s Ryan Jack. Trelli wasn’t the only victim of a Hatter wrestler, given the perennial power won the State Open team title.
Trelli had a first round bye, then took down Ridgefield’s Benjamin Smart in a 13-4 major decision. Trelli scored a 21-6 quarterfinal tech fall against Terryville’s Cayleb Leclerc, then claimed a 5-2 decision against Wilton’s Travis Longo in the semifinal.

Bristol Eastern’s Mikey Barrett finished third at 160 pounds in the State Open

Barrett wound up with a third place finish at 160 pounds. He made it all the way to the championship semifinal, where he was pinned by eventual Open champion Ryan Devivo of Xavier. Barrett was dropped into the consolation semifinals, where he battled to a 4-3 decision against Danbury’s Gino Baratta. In the third place match, Barrett recorded a 5-3 decision against Greenwich’s Michael Ceci.
Before the loss to Devivo, Barrett knocked off Baratta in the Round of 16 via a 5-3 decision, then pinned Ledyard’s Jacob Millbach 2:40 into their championship quarterfinal match.
Bristol Eastern had the highest area team finish, taking 12th with 52 points.
