Holy Cross boys spoil Wolcott’s varsity lacrosse debut

Wolcott’s Chase Bertrand (3) makes a move around Holy Cross’ RJ Blanco during Friday’s boys lacrosse match.
Holy Cross’ Zach Mehlin (31) celebrates a goal.

It was a day late due to heavy rain, but the Wolcott boys lacrosse team got a chance to play its first varsity match on Friday at home against Holy Cross.
The Crusaders put a damper on any Eagle celebration ideas with a 12-9 win on a cold, dank late afternoon at Joe Monroe Field. It was the season opener for both teams.
Wolcott fought to a 2-2 tie after one quarter, but Holy Cross claimed a 5-3 lead by the halftime break. The Crusaders pushed out to a 10-3 advantage, then it went to 12-6.
The Eagles tallied the final three goals of the match, but it was too little, too late.
Charlie Borecki, Dillon Sanzari and Zach Mehlin all had big days for Holy Cross.
Wolcott was led by DJ Lourenco, Chase Bertrand, Mike Harkin, Riley Meyers, Evan St. Arnauld and Kevin Couillard. For seniors like Lourenco, Bertrand, Joe Audibert, Jake Audibert, Justin Darley, Ben Gilliam, Zachary Jacques, Joe Knapik, James Schultz and Bobby Stoeckert, this will be their lone varsity season.
Wolcott again tries for its first win this coming Wednesday against Windsor at 11 a.m. at Joe Monroe Field.
