WATERBURY’S SPRING ROUNDUP #1: Holy Cross softball bounces back from season-opening loss

Holy Cross softball began the defense of its Class S state title with a tough 1-0 walkoff loss at Seymour on Monday.
The Crusaders rebounded in a big way Wednesday with a 10-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Joan Joyce Field in the Municipal Stadium complex. Sarah Lawton fired a complete game one-hitter with 15 strikeouts and just one walk. The lone hit for the Hearts came from Erin Keeley.
Lawton also had a monster day at the plate. She went 3-for-4 with a home run, two triples, five RBI and three runs scored. Allie Brown and Val Nobrega each had two hits. Brown had a RBI and two runs scored while Nobrega doubled and scored a run. Alexandra Lombardo had two RBI, and both Carley Defoe and Aubry DeFoe drove in a run. 
Holy Cross plays Waterbury Career Academy Wednesday at Huntingdon Park.
WCA: Ariana Torres and Gabie Rocco had the lone hits in an 8-0 season-opening loss to St. Paul on Tuesday at Joan Joyce Field.
Crosby (0-1), Kennedy (0-2), Sacred Heart (0-2) and Wilby (0-2) all went winless in the first week.
Kaynor Tech is one of seven Class M teams that has yet to play a game so far this season. The Panthers open their season Tuesday at Harding.

BASEBALL
Holy Cross: The Crusaders downed Seymour 8-3 in their first game.
Fran Phelan, Matt Bonvicini, Michael Keating and Connor Goggin each had two hits and a RBI for Holy Cross. William Marshall had a hit and two RBI while Tim Zupkus had a hit and RBI. Goggin and Bonvicini each had a double. 
Phelan pitched a complete game and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Holy Cross plays four games in four days starting Monday.
Kennedy: The Eagles began the season with a 3-1 win over Derby.
Ivan Meraz-Sanchez pitched five innings and picked up the win. Meraz-Sanchez struck out seven and walked six. He gave up one run on four hits.
Meraz-Sanchez, Pablo Barrera, Josh Russo and Adrian Rivera each had one hit for Kennedy. Barrera, Angel Galindez and Xavier Frias all scored one run.
Crosby 7, Kaynor Tech 6: The Bulldogs snuck past the Panthers for a win at Crosby High School on Monday.
Crosby lost to Ansonia on Saturday at Municipal Stadium to fall to 1-1.
Kaynor Tech’s next game is Tuesday at Wolcott.
WCA: The Spartans opened the season with a win over Whitney Tech on Monday, then lost to St. Paul on Wednesday.
WCA blew out Whitney Tech 16-3 behind a monster day from Jordan Layman. Layman homered twice, including a grand slam, and drove in five runs. Adrian Velez tripled, drove in three runs and scored two runs. Dom Musco had two RBI. Damian Feliciano doubled and scored a run.
WCA lost 8-1 to St. Paul.
Wilby (0-2) lost to Oxford and Woodland.
As of Saturday morning, Sacred Heart was one of 12 Class S teams to not have played a game yet this season.
Chase Collegiate lost its lone game of the week to the Master’s School. The two other scheduled games were postponed.

GIRLS TENNIS
Holy Cross: The Crusaders began the season with a 6-1 win over Seymour on Monday, then followed up with a 5-2 victory over Wolcott on Wednesday.
Holy Cross swept the four singles matches against Seymour and Wolcott. The singles winners were Elena Tormo, Therese Cayabyab, Clare Sullivan and Julia Dzinski.
Sacred Heart: The Hearts swept Kennedy 7-0 at Chase Park on Wednesday.
Kennedy (0-1), Wilby (0-1) and Crosby (0-2) were winless in their first week. Chase Collegiate is 0-4 to start the season.

BOYS TENNIS
Holy Cross: The Crusaders went down to Wolcott on Wednesday, but knocked off Sacred Heart on Friday.
Holy Cross won 8-1 over Sacred Heart. The Crusaders swept all six singles matches, then claimed two of the three doubles contests.
Wilby: The Wildcats started with a loss to Woodland on Monday, but rebounded with a 6-3 win over Kennedy on Friday at Bucks Hill Park.
Sacred Heart: The Hearts went 1-2 in their first week of the season.
Sacred Heart was shut out by Wolcott on Monday, but rebounded with a 5-4 win over Kennedy on Wednesday at Chase Park. The Hearts lost Friday at Holy Cross.
Danny Li, David Kulla, Leandro Gonzalez and Gabriel Melo won singles matches for Sacred Heart against Kennedy. Kulla teamed with Klediol Kaso to win in doubles.
Crosby (0-1) and Kennedy (0-3) were winless in their first week. Of note, Kennedy No. 1 singles player Camilo Barrera won all three of his matches. Chase Collegiate is also 0-3 to start the season.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD
Holy Cross: The Crusaders recorded wins over WCA (106-43), Wilby (122-20) and Kaynor Tech (104-39) on Wednesday at home.
Meah Austin had three individual victories and was also part of a winning relay. Devan Eason, Hayley Gilmore and Natalie Hodak were all part of two winning relays. Eason, Jasmine Thorpe, Madison Smith and Kristina Chartier all had individual wins for Holy Cross. The Crusaders swept all three relays.
WCA: The Spartans defeated Wilby (112-20) and Kaynor Tech (88-53) but lost to Holy Cross.
Salma Gudaf and Latavia Parker had individual wins for WCA.
Kaynor Tech: The Panthers scored a win over Wilby (83-59) but lost to Holy Cross and WCA.
Jillian Ducham, Brianna Isaacs and Roberta King won individual events for Kaynor Tech.
Wilby: The Wildcats lost to Holy Cross, WCA and Kaynor Tech.
Khira Francis and Alana Daunis won individual events for Wilby.
Sacred Heart: The Hearts lost 64-59 to Oxford and 98-41 to Derby on Wednesday at Oxford.
Kennedy: The Eagles lost 99-45 to Seymour but beat St. Paul 80-35 Wednesday at Seymour.
Crosby: The Bulldogs lost to Watertown and Woodland on Wednesday.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
WCA: The Spartans went to Holy Cross on Wednesday and came away with wins over Kaynor Tech (104-29), Wilby (112-31) and Holy Cross (81-69).
Trevor Glymph had two individual wins while Harrison Foley added one. WCA also won the 4×800 and 4×400 relays. The 4×800 members were Julian Edwards, Daren Sam, Chris Acty and Randy Martinez. For the 4×400, it was Giovasky Caquias, Acty, Glymph and Zheki DeSouza.
Holy Cross: The Crusaders defeated Wilby (113-31) and Kaynor Tech (120-26) but lost to WCA.
Marckens Auguste had two wins while Sean Price, Kyle Moser, Dimitri Thompson, DeAndre Wallace and Dom Bernard picked up a victory apiece. 
Wilby: The Wildcats knocked off Kaynor Tech (49-47) and lost to WCA and Holy Cross.
Dwayne Blackwood had two individual wins for Wilby. The Wildcats also won the 4×100 relay behind the team of Blackwood, Kevin Lacen, Joshua Marcial and Dylen McKitty.
Kaynor Tech: The Panthers lost to WCA, Holy Cross and Wilby.
Terrell Patterson had two individual victories while James Velez had one win.
Kennedy: The Eagles lost to Seymour (112-38) but defeated St. Paul (105-24) on Wednesday at Seymour.
Sacred Heart: The Hearts took down Oxford 95-46 and lost to Derby 73-64 on Wednesday in the season-opening meet at Oxford High School.
Crosby: The Bulldogs lost to Woodland and Watertown in Watertown.
Mehki Arline had the lone individual win for Crosby.

BOYS LACROSSE
Chase Collegiate: The Highlanders defeated Marvelwood School 23-11 on Saturday at home. Two other matches were postponed, and another was cancelled.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Holy Cross: The Crusaders lost a tough one, 9-7 to the Bristol Co-op on Monday, April 3.
Holy Cross’ next match is Monday at home against Housatonic Regional.
Chase Collegiate: Due to the weather, the Highlanders have yet to play a match this season.

BOYS GOLF
Chase Collegiate: The Highlanders lost to the Wooster School and South Kent on Wednesday at the Candlewood Valley Country Club in New Milford.
