WOLCOTT’S SPRING ROUNDUP #1: Eagle girls tennis 1-2 to start season

Wolcott girls tennis started the season with a win and two losses.
The Eagles defeated Wilcox Tech 5-2 in the opener, but lost 5-2 to Holy Cross and Woodland. In the Holy Cross matchup, Robab Iftikhar and Makayla Welton combined for a doubles win, as did the team of Kathryn and Kerianne Rodrigues. In the Woodland contest, Iftikhar was the lone singles winner. The doubles team of Rachel Polous and Kerianne Rodrigues was also victorious.

BOYS TENNIS

Wolcott began defense of its NVL title with wins of Sacred Heart, Holy Cross and Woodland.
The Eagles dropped only one match in their three victories, and that came in the 8-1 triumph over the Hawks. Wolcott figures to again be a contender for the NVL title with many players returning. Key seniors are Matt Spina, Matt Mastropietro, Jackson Yost and Mike Perreault. Key juniors are Alex Hale and Raheel Chowdhury.
Wolcott swept singles against both Holy Cross and Woodland. The singles players in both matches were Spina, Mastropietro, Hale, Yost, Perrault and Chowdhury.

GIRLS OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
Wolcott got off to a great start on Wednesday with wins over Naugatuck and Torrington at Naugatuck High School.
The Eagles defeated the Greyhounds 73-65 and the Raiders 74-71. Cythia Dias won two events to lead Wolcott. Mackenzie Gould won one individual event and was part of a winning relay along with Alize Rodriguez, Allison Gough and Melanie Reed.
Wolcott takes on Kennedy and Waterbury Career Academy on Tuesday.

BASEBALL
Wolcott began defense of its Class M state championship with a tough 8-5 loss at Oxford on Friday.
The Eagles fell behind 5-1 after one inning, but came back to tie with a run in the top of the second inning and three more in the third. The Wolverines scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain control.
Jeff Nicol and Ray Bartoli each had two hits. Nicol homered and drove in two runs while Bartoli had a double and a RBI. Ethan Gillotti doubled and drove in a run while Jack Drewry had a single and a RBI.
Bobby White took the loss on the mound.
Saturday’s home opener against Enfield was postponed due to poor field conditions. Wolcott is scheduled to play four straight games Monday-Thursday next week. 

SOFTBALL
Wolcott fell 10-3 at Oxford in its opener on Saturday. The Eagles are at Crosby on Monday.

BOYS OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Eagles opened the season with losses to Naugatuck and Torrington at Naugatuck High School.
Wolcott’s next meet is Tuesday at Kennedy and Waterbury Career Academy.

GIRLS LACROSSE
The Eagles are 0-3 following losses to Jonathan Law (Milford), Housatonic Regional and Watertown.
