Sacred Heart sophomore Edward Williams had an awesome season for the outdoor track and field team.
For Williams, first place in hurdle events was almost second nature. Williams won the 110-meter hurdle event in the city, at the Torrington Varsity Alumni Track and Field Challenge, the NVL championship meet, Class S and the State Open. In the 300-meter hurdles, Williams was first in the city, at the Torrington meet, the NVL championship, Class S and the State Open.
You read that correctly. Williams swept the hurdle events at the city meet, the Torrington challenge, the NVL championship, Class S and the State Open. That’s quite the accomplishment.
And Williams is just a sophomore.
“What a great season!” head coach Tom Festa posted on Facebook. “It will only get better!”
In the NVL championship meet at Seymour High School, Williams was one hit hurdle away from a possible sub 14-second time in the 110-meter hurdles. In the 300 hurdles, Williams broke a 15-year old record on the way to victory. Festa summed up the work of his super sophomore in simple terms.
“It’s amazing what he has done,” Festa said during the meet.
An injury kept Williams from competing in the 110-meter hurdles at the New England championship meet, but he has two more years to go after it. He also has two more years to do more amazing things in the hurdles in the NVL and the state. It should be a fun two years to watch.
