TRI-STATE: Battle for first round byes heats up

In the Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League, the top four teams get a bye through the first round of the playoffs.
Several teams with local players are in the running for the Top 4, including the Naugatuck Dogs, Blasius Chevrolet and the Bethlehem Plowboys. The Watertown Blaze are rolling to the top seed, but it’s open after them.
On Thursday, Blasius claimed a 2-1 walkoff win over the Southington 66ers at Hotchkiss Field in Prospect. Gary Novakowski was terrific again on the mound, and Blasius also got big contributions on offense from Matt Wahl and Paul Novakowski. Naugatuck knocked off the Wolcott Scrappers 4-1 to stay in the second place tie with Blasius at 9-3. The Dogs beat Blasius in their regular season meeting and own the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Bethlehem routed the Litchfield Cowboys 10-3, and former Sacred Heart High standout Matt Mancini was right in the middle of the offensive outburst. Mancini had three hits and four RBI in the victory. The Plowboys remain in the hunt for the Top 4 with a 9-4 record.
The Top 4 teams in Tri-State will also represent the league in the state tournament.
