Quarterback play key to first wins for Wolcott, Crosby

The Wolcott and Crosby football teams each enter Friday night’s NVL game at Jimmy Lee Stadium with 1-1 records.
The Eagles and Bulldogs both have their quarterbacks to thank on offense. For Wolcott, Mike Polzella was unbelievable in a 48-22 win over Kennedy. Crosby beat Derby 40-21, and Alberim Klenja threw two touchdowns in the second half to key a comeback.
Polzella missed on just one pass attempt (13-for-14) and threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns in the Wolcott victory. Polzella averaged 22 yards per completion with a long of 72 yards to Nick Longo. Polzella also ran for a team-high 58 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Longo (153) and Mike Ciarlo (114) combined for 11 catches, 267 yards and two touchdowns.
In the second half against Derby, Klenja tossed touchdowns of 52 yards to Jzalic Alexander and 10 yards to Iziah Barnes. Klenja also accounted for Crosby’s first score of the game when he hooked up with Jaedon Wolfe for a 73-yard touchdown. Isaac Burgos had two touchdown runs for the Bulldogs. Klenja was confident coming into the season after being Mike Marshall’s backup. So far, Crosby is averaging 35 points per game.
Both quarterbacks are seniors, and each will look to lead his team to an important victory on Friday in Waterbury.
