Jack Drewry helped hit and pitch Wolcott baseball to a 5-3 win over Woodland on the opening day of the spring sports season Saturday in Beacon Falls.
Drewry clubbed a three-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Eagles ahead 3-2. Tino Ciarlo singled to lead off the inning, then Dane Hassan drew a two-out walk to bring up Drewry with runners on first and second.
Woodland tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the inning, but Wolcott responded with two more runs in the fourth to go ahead for good. The Eagles drew four straight walks, with one runner getting thrown out at home. Nick Trager lifted a fly ball to left and reached on an error with the bases loaded, which scored Anthony Ligi and put Wolcott up 4-3. Hassan’s sacrifice fly brought home Ciarlo for a 5-3 lead.
The Hawks brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Drewry picked up a strikeout, then got a groundout to Trager at second base to end the game.
Ciarlo had two hits and scored twice while Trey Nastri also collected two hits.
